The marketing strategies of open source versus closed source ESBs

I’m continuing my series of blog entries where I am sharing some early results from REPAMATron – my automated competitive marketing intelligence gathering tool. In this entry I’m looking at the difference in marketing strategy between open source and closed source enterprise service buses (EBSs).

REPAMATron automates my REPAMA competitive marketing intelligence methodology and is currently in Alpha. I’m using the ESB market, a market I know well, to help to tune the algorithms at the heart of REPAMATron.

In my previous entry I looked at 3 Enterprise Service Bus vendors’ marketing strategies (WSO2, Talend and FuseSource) and compared them to the computed market mean. I’ve now added another 6 ESB vendors to the study from the long list… Continue reading

WSO2 – Fits in between Talend and FuseSource…

…for the amount of jargon contained in it’s marketing copy.

In a previous post I mentioned that I would follow-up to with a calculation for how much jargon WSO2 uses in its ESB marketing when compared to Talend and FuseSource. I’ve now calculated the Arcanicity Index score for WSO2′s ESB marketing copy; and whilst not quite being the answer to life, the universe and everything, it’s not far off – see below.

The Arcanicity Index looks to measure how much jargon a text contains and by extension how much specialist knowledge a reader would need to posses in order to understand it. I’d previously scored both Talend and FuseSource which had shown that Talend’s marketing copy was much less arcane… Continue reading

WSO2, or rather one of its competitors, has thrown its hat into the ring

As mentioned before I’m pulling together a short list of ESB vendors that will feature in a REPAMA competitive marketing intelligence study. I’ve added, or rather I should say that one of WSO2′s competitors has added WSO2 to the short list.

I’m using this study to road-test Project REPAMATron – an automated system that infers a vendors’s marketing strategy from their marketing materials. I’ve decided to add WSO2 into the mix for a number of reasons. The main reason being that I spoke to a representative of one of the other ESB vendors on my long list who asked me “Are you going to be looking at WSO2?”. Which was good enough for me. If that vendor was… Continue reading

Lustratus predictions for the infrastructure software market in 2011

We all make predictions right? But do we ever return to our predictions and grade ourselves on how accurate we were? Well my Lustratus Research colleague Steve Craggs does that each year with his annual predictions for the infrastructure software market.

In 2011 he looks at likely developments in the following areas…

  • Business rules
  • Cloud computing
  • SOA adoption
  • Open source integration
  • Appliances

…but not before he looks back at his 2010 predictions and assess whether he was channeling the spirit of Nostradamus or not. Steve’s latest crystal ball gazing can be found on the Lustratus document store here and embedded on the Lustratus REPAMA SlideShare account below.

Talend acquires Sopera – Does the World Need “Suck-it-and-see” Global Middleware?

I had a chat with an ex-colleague yesterday who told me that Talend had acquired Germany-based open source SOA platform ‘vendor’ Sopera.

This move came on the back of the news that the company had completed a $34M round of funding and Talend seems to be aiming very high with it’s combined proposition. In the accompanying press release, which is refreshingly bullish and direct, the company is aiming at vendors such as TIBCO, Software AG and Progress Software; describing those vendors’ solutions as ‘proprietary’.

Whilst it will be very interesting to see how Talend embeds the acquired technology into its own offering, it will be even more interesting to see how Talend will massage it’s go-to-market model in the… Continue reading

Open Source and the Impotence(sic) of Being Earnest

Oscar WildeQ. What do the questions…

“How do porcupines make love?”

and

“How do you ‘sell’ open source software?”

…have in common?

A. The answer to both is “Carefully!”

Software sales is a funny business.  Push too hard and you’re open to accusations of potentially ripping people off through aggressive tactics, don’t push hard enough and you end up having had many nice discussions (tea and biscuit meetings as they are known) with many nice people but your children go hungry.  It’s a balance.  And nowhere is this more in evidence than in the open source world.

I was chatting to an ex-colleague last week about the issues they have taking their open source software products to market.… Continue reading
